ASSISTANT PROFESSIONAL OFFICER

BASIC SALARY: R337 626 TO R422 017 PER ANNUM – REF NO: CS 160/22 – 30 REED STREET, BELLVILLE

Requirements:

  • National Diploma or B Degree (e.g. environmental health, engineering or medicine relevant to the discipline of occupational hygiene)
  • At least two (2) years’ relevant working experience for an approved inspection authority – occupational hygiene under direct supervision of a certified occupational hygienist
  • Conversant and work experience in performing various occupational hygiene laboratory work (e.g. weighing of membrane filters, calibration of equipment, etc.)
  • Conversant and work experience in performing various kinds of occupational hygiene surveys (e.g. Illumination, noise, ergonomics, etc.)
  • Acquainted with and skilled in occupational hygiene report writing
  • A working knowledge of the SANS 17020 quality system (as applicable to occupational hygiene inspection bodies) will be an advantage
  • Valid registration, at the minimum, as an Occupational Hygiene Assistant with a professional body recognised by the Chief Inspector of the Department of Employment and Labour
  • A valid legal knowledge certificate
  • In-depth knowledge of the relevant Acts and Regulations, pertaining to the discipline of Occupational Health and Occupational Hygiene
  • Code EB driver’s licence (Code B not endorsed)
  • Fit to work in confined spaces and at heights
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Key performance areas:

  • Support and implement the occupational hygiene monitoring programme throughout the organisation under the direct supervision of the occupational hygienist
  • Assist in the promoting and communicating of occupational hygiene policies, procedures and guidelines to all levels within the organisation
  • Assist in conducting task observations and job analysis as part of the monitoring programme
  • Assist in the preparing of occupational hygiene survey reports for approval by the occupational hygienist
  • Assist with the performance of hazard identification, hazard evaluation and risk assessment to recommend control measures
  • Research and develop information for training purposes relevant to occupational health and occupational hygiene hazards in a workplace setting
  • Investigate reported Section 25 cases and generate a report for approval by the Occupational Hygienist
  • Perform administrative tasks to maintain the quality system according to the ISO/IEC 17020 requirements for approved inspection bodies
  • Ensure equipment maintenance schedules are adhered to and keep record of all equipment and monitor consumables usage
  • Ensure the necessary laboratory work (pre- and post-) relevant to the occupational hygiene survey
  • Assist with the development of documented procedures for ongoing education, training, technical knowledge and skills development for the inspection body personnel.
